Philadelphia is having its first ever Science Festival! April 15 – April 28!
Some of you may already know about it, but I didn’t. Boy, am I excited. I am a big science enthusiast, even if I’m not very good at it. In fact, it’s a dream of mine to be an elementary school science teacher. At least it was until I realized that I’m not as scientifically inclined as I would need to get through the schooling.
The most exciting part is that food science has a few featured events! And you’d be so right in thinking I’m about to list them all here and tell you what they’re about.

Sunday, April 17, 2pm – Dirt to Dinner Plate: Agriculture Today
Take this opportunity to learn how food goes from seed to your plate. The event takes place at the Wyck Historic House in Germantown includes speakers as well as a tour of the house and it’s gardens. Panelists are from Wyck, Fair Food Philly, and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture and was developed by the Food Trust, Philadelphia University, and the Wyck Historic House and Garden. Monday, April 18, 6pm – “Flavor Tripping” – The Magical Miracle Berry
This event is sold out, but it sounds mysterious enough to write about. The event takes time to explore a new berry that changes the way flavors taste in your mouth (example: lemons turn sweet after eating one berry). It may just be a chance for a new company to get its product out there, but could you imagine being able to change the way something tastes? I guess the questions then become, would you want to? What are the implications for the way restaurants serve food or the way parents get their kids to eat vegetables? Here’s the link to the event listing.
Tuesday, April 19, 7pm – Modified: A Look at the Future of Food
Join Dr. Dominic Sisti and Dr. Nina Fedoroff in an interactive discussion about the future of food and food technology. From what I’ve gathered (being facetious here), genetic modification and changing food in generally is a fairly controversial topic in the food community. You do need reservations for the event, which takes place at La Salle University, but it’s free. Link to the event site and link to the PSF event.
Wednesday, April 20, 6:30pm – The Artisanal Microbe: Cheese
Try samples of different cheeses at Di Bruno Brothers in Center City while listening to a discussion about the role of microbes in making cheese. The event is free, but requires reservations. The reservation website is weird. You have to make an account and the only way I could find the event was by searching “Di Bruno” in the search box at the bottom of the screen. But it’s probably worth it. Link to the PSF event.
Thursday, April 21, 2pm – Seed Starting: Gardening with Kids
I, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask), do not have a child, although I’m debating stealing one for this event. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has put together a little parent-child time to learn about gardening and (YES!) there are hands on demonstrations. No reservations are required and it takes place at Ramonita de Rodriguez Branch Library. Link with directions.
Friday, April 22, 6pm – In the Mouth of a Lion: The Sensory World of Animals
Oh. My. Gosh. Let’s talk about how cool this is. You get to taste the way animals do. No, that’s not some cannibalistic reference. You’ll be provided with…well, I’m not sure what, but you’ll be provided with stuff to alter your taste buds and find out how animals taste. It’s a collaboration between Monell Center, which studies the senses, and an unnamed Philadelphia Zoo nutritionist (really? they have those?). It takes place at Rembrandt’s on 23rd St. Reservations are required. I’m not sure if it’s free, but I’ll let you know when I’ve got my reservations all set to go. Of course, the link.
Friday, April 22, 6:30pm – Melting Moments of Delight: The Science of Chocolate
It pains my heart, but this event happens at the same time as the previous one. The good news? It’s sold out. Which isn’t really good news if you wanted to learn about chocolate, but good news if you were interested in the lions. It too is a collaboration between Monell and another company you may have heard of, Mars Incorporated. Here’s the link anyway, just so you can torture yourself a little.
Saturday, April 23, 7pm – From Hops to Stein: The Science of Beer
Another collaboration with the Monell Center (seriously check out the website, the place is amazing), this time with the Brewers from Yards, The Franklin Institute, Philly Tech Week, Two Guys on Beer, and Philly Weekly. It’s a lecture on how taste buds and noses process the taste of beer. Also, you get some specially brewed Science Festival beer. It takes place at Yard’s Brewery (a word I still can’t say) and tickets are $20. Linkity link link.
Monday, April 25, 6pm – Café Scientifique Presents: Fading Senses
At this point, you can be sure if it has “sense” in the title, it’s a collaboration with the Monell Center. This time it’s with the University of Pennsylvania. Hear how sense of smell changes as we age and how diseases such as Alzheimer’s affect it. This isn’t specifically food related, but I included because smell may (or may not) be the most important factor in the way we taste. I mean, ever noticed that when you get a cold you can’t taste anything except really spicy or sour foods? No reservations are required and it’s free. It takes place at Café Scientifique. El linko.
Monday, April 25, 7pm – From the Beginning: Healthy Eating in Toddlers and Children
A collaboration between the Food Trust, Monell Center, and Temple University about the different ways you can start your child out on a healthy diet and keep it that way. Heck yea I wanna go. It takes place in Ritter Hall at Temple University and no reservations are required. Also, free. Personally, I think if you’re contemplating having a child, are in the process of having one (I guess I mean pregnant), or already have one (or many), you should check it out. And you can bet I’ll be frantically trying to figure out how to get from University City to Temple University in -20 minutes. Then again, it’s not really about me, is it? Wednesday, April 27, 6:30pm – All Things Fermented: The Science of Beer and Cheese
A collaboration between City Food Tours and Triumph Brewing Co., this tasting event lasts 2 hours. You get cheese and beer which, coincidentally, pair together better than cheese and wine because of the way the beer is fermented. Perhaps they’ll cover that. Tickets are $49 and it takes place at the Triumph Brewing Company in Old City. There’s limited space, so if you have the cash, reserve now. Here’s a link to the City Foods page and the PSF page.
Thursday, April 28, 6pm – Feeding the Future
Another event about technology and agriculture. It is a collaboration between the Academy of Natural Sciences Philadelphia and the PA Association of Sustainable Agriculture. Reservations are required and it takes place at the Academy of Natural Sciences, or the Dinosaur Museum, as the cool kids call it. So…me. Link and link.
So it looks like I’m gonna be pretty busy between April 16 and 28. Check out the entire calendar. There are so many events, lots to do with your kids, and just general good, scientific fun. It’s important to expand your knowledge. After all, that’s what this (under construction) blog is all about.
